Theatre work is fundamentally different from sport or arena entertainment. The audience in the room paid to be present; the performers are carrying a show that depends on focus, timing, and trust. Vernum Broadcast approaches stage recording with that contract in mind — restraint and respect for the performance, sightlines that do not break immersion, sound captured as the room hears it, and a crew that knows when to be invisible.

We film stage work for three overlapping uses: live stream where a same-day or live-as-live cut matters; promotional or trailer material that sells the production without misrepresenting it; and archive masters that may sit unused for years until a revival, licensing conversation, or education deal makes them invaluable. One capture day, planned properly, can serve all three — but only if coverage, audio, and deliverables are scoped honestly at the start.

Multi-camera layouts that follow the show

Our multi-camera layouts follow director or DSM line without stepping on the show. That means agreeing positions at recce — locked wides from rear stalls or circle, operated singles for principals, long-lens detail where the design supports it — and rehearsing transitions where the blocking is complex. Operators are briefed on eyelines, follow-spot behaviour, and the difference between covering a quiet scene and a full-company number.

We do not impose a broadcast house style on theatre work. We read what is on the stage and design the shoot around it. Where your lighting designer has built the picture for the back row, we honour it — not by lifting gain until the shadows disappear, but by choosing bodies and positions that hold detail in the designed contrast. That sensitivity is what separates usable theatre capture from footage that looks like a security feed with better lenses.

Stream, trailer, and archive from one day

For live stream, we can support a vision-mixed output on the night or deliver ISOs for a rapid turnaround — depending on your platform spec and whether the stream is truly live or live-as-live. For trailer work, we capture with edit in mind: clean handles, performance-complete takes, and audio paths that survive a promo mix. For archive, we deliver graded or neutral masters, full ISO records, and metadata that helps whoever opens the project in five years.

Deliverables are matched to your post house or marketing team — ProRes or agreed broadcast codecs, sensible folder structure, timecode sync across cameras, and a conversation about who finishes the edit. We can deliver a full show master under director's notes, or hand off rushes only. The right answer depends on the production's budget, rights position, and internal capacity.

Sensitive operation in a live room

Recording during live audiences demands discipline: dampened heads, low-vis blacks, cable runs that never cross audience paths, comms on closed-back headsets, and no production-lighting changes unless explicitly agreed. We operate during tight turnarounds — one performance captured on press night, or a short run where the only window is between shows — with prep that reduces risk on the night.

Whether it is a one-off capture or a short run, we bring broadcast habits to a non-broadcast environment. Redundant audio where the tier allows, calibrated colour between cameras, script supervision or data wrangling on larger setups, and a single point of contact so the producing company is not managing five freelancers and a hire house. Theatre producers have enough to worry about on capture day; our job is to shrink that list.
